About The Practitioners:
When Carl and Reece Stough founded the non-profit institute, The Carl Stough Institute of Breathing Coordination, Inc., in 1965, their goal was to provide research and education in the branch of physiology which deals primarily in the function of the muscles of respiration. The Stoughs foresaw the worsening conditions of respiratory disease, stress, and pollution, and they dedicated efforts to educate the world with a solution: Breathing Coordination, for the relief of dyspnea (breathlessness) associated with respiratory disease and disorder and other physiological and psychological conditions, as well as for prophylaxis and maintenance of health and well-being. The Stough Institute, which has recently closed, was empowered by the State of New York as a charitable organization to provide humane services in the area of health, education and welfare, and to extend the knowledge and practice of Breathing Coordination.
With all his heart, Carl believed that, given a chance, the application of Breathing Coordination could improve health in every society throughout the world. Although he made significant progress, he unfortunately did not live long enough to completely fulfill that dream. In October, 2000, Carl Stough passed away, followed a few months later by his beloved wife and partner, Reece. These two incredibly insightful and caring individuals shared their discoveries, and thousands of us benefited. Now they leave an impressive legacy so that others who were taught by Carl may continue his quest.
A number of practitioners who studied with Carl have incorporated the principles of Breathing Coordination into their work. A few of them joined efforts to establish this web site, which serves as a home base of communication for all those interested in learning more about Breathing Coordination and its many positive benefits. Educational materials currently available include the book, Dr. Breath, and A Guide to Breathing Coordination, a recently released CD/audio tape intended as a how-to-help yourself guide.
